Shins Member Allegedly Beats Up Next Top Model Girlfriend

Marty Crandall and Elyse Sewell Shins multi-instrumentalist Marty Crandall and his America's Next Top Model (ex)girlfriend Elyse Sewell were arrested on charges of domestic assault at a Sacramento hotel on Friday, January 4th (via Pitchfork).
What we know of the situation thus far comes from Sewell herself, who explained her side of the story via her blog yesterday: "On the drive home (home?) from Albuquerque to Portland, my ex-boyfriend got shitfaced and roughed me up in a Sacramento hotel. I escaped from the room through a blitzkrieg of violence and talked to hotel security, who called the fuzz.

"Because he had a bite mark, inflicted in self-defense, on his arm, Marty told the police to PRESS CHARGES OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AGAINST ME. Now I am a felon. I spent the night in jail." Sewell goes on to describe her tactless treatment at the hands of Sacramento County police, and includes a couple photos, including one depicting her injuries. [Read More]

Video: The Shins - "Breathe" (Pink Floyd Cover)

The Shins have added a dark side to their recent live shows slipping in a cover of Pink Floyd's "Breathe" into the set list. Too bad they didn't rock this one out on SNL instead of "New Slang" for the zillionth time. Rumor has that the band is working on its own laser light show. Look for it at a planetarium near you. It will change your life.

New York Times Reviews the Shins Madison Square Garden Concert

The Shins
Shins ahoy!
Now that the Shins are on iPods spanning Natalie Portman, your average hipster, and some frat guy, the band isn't playing in basement dives anymore. The New York Times reviews their Madison Square Garden performance:
As a band, the Shins have come a long way since their first album, or even their second. The keyboardist and guitarist Marty Crandall, the bassist Dave Hernandez and the drummer Jesse Sandoval maintain a grounded sensibility that keeps Mr. Mercer’s whimsy from feeling too ethereal. Eric Johnson added textural details on synthesizer and pedal steel guitar. Anita Robinson from the opening band, Viva Voce, sang sporadic background vocals, harmonizing with Mr. Mercer’s ooh-ooh-oohs on “New Slang.”

"Recorded entirely under solar power," Brightblack Morning Light like things like tee-pees, headbands and most likely hallucinogenic drugs. More solar power to 'em. Their second album of slow motion hippie blues, Motion to Rejoin, is due September 23rd on Matador. [DOWNLOAD]

Consider Rook essential summer listening. Like your "Summer Reading" list, Rook isn't really "summer-y" at all. It's heavy, dense, dramatic and beautiful and dark. Four of those five adjectives actually DO apply to summer, come to think of it... - jimtarnation  [READ REVIEW]
