Okkervil River's The Stand Ins Due in September

Okkervil River Pitchfork reports that Okkervil River's fifth full-length album, The Stand Ins, is set to drop on September 9th via Jagjaguwar.
The set is described as a sequel to last year's exquisite The Stage Names LP, which its equally Tinseltown-ready title would allude to.

You'll recall that The Stage Names was originally conceived as a double album, as Will Sheff touched on in our interview with him from last summer. Guess this is that, then?

Video: Okkervil River Ukulele Session

Okkervil River performed a few songs for the Belgian newspaper Le Soir's Ukulele Session series back in December. The fruits of the locker-room jam session can now be enjoyed by all as Will Sheff and Co. knock out acoustic versions of "A Hand to Take Hold of the Scene" and "A King And A Queen."

Okkervil River Offer Free Covers EP

Okkervil River - Golden Opportunities Mixtape

Okkervil River is currently offering a free mostly-covers EP including songs by John Cale, Joni Mitchell and Randy Newman among others. The set, entitled Golden Opportunities Mixtape, also includes the lone original, "Listening To Otis Redding At Home During Christmas." All songs were recorded live on tour throughout the band's 2006 – 2007 dates.

There are several great performances, but the cream of the crop is the Discollective ultra-fav "April Anne" by John Phillips from Papa John's solo album John, the Wolfking of LA. It doesn't quite live up to the majesty of the original (not that anyone could), but it's nice to know Will Sheff also likes one of our favorite records! Sheff also points out that the band didn't even know the song before they set down to record it in the Daytrotter studios.

Okkervil River's Will Sheff Talks Stage Names

Okkervil River Will Sheff discusses the high expectations of Okkervil River's forthcoming The Stage Names (out October 9th on Jagjaguwar) with Billboard:
"I felt that everything we were doing was going to be scrutinized a lot more this time, because of the success of 'Black Sheep Boy,'" Sheff tells Billboard.com. "But when I was writing 'Black Sheep Boy,' I wanted to roll around with it, and make it very dark and unsettling. I felt like if I did that again, I'd fall into the trap of repeating myself, where I would end up being a cartoon of myself. I wanted to write an album that was light and friendly, but still serious [this time.]" [Read More]

"Recorded entirely under solar power," Brightblack Morning Light like things like tee-pees, headbands and most likely hallucinogenic drugs. More solar power to 'em. Their second album of slow motion hippie blues, Motion to Rejoin, is due September 23rd on Matador. [DOWNLOAD]

Consider Rook essential summer listening. Like your "Summer Reading" list, Rook isn't really "summer-y" at all. It's heavy, dense, dramatic and beautiful and dark. Four of those five adjectives actually DO apply to summer, come to think of it... - jimtarnation  [READ REVIEW]
