Is Denton, TX Indie Rock's Next Austin?

Midlake The New York Times profiles the Denton, Texas indie music scene—home of University of North Texas's College of Music and, of course, Midlake:
WITH its Piggly Wiggly markets and dusty pawnshops, the Texas college town of Denton does not look the part of a Woodstock in waiting. A Romanesque courthouse juts out of the central square, as in that fictional town in “Back to the Future.” And whenever the local college football team plays at Fouts Field, the entire town seems to put on Mean Green T-shirts.

But wander into the Panhandle House, a barnlike recording studio on North Locust Street, and you’ll find Midlake, a five-person band whose music the British newspaper The Guardian has called “a dreamy concoction of Neil Young, Fleetwood Mac, Tom Petty and the Yardbirds.” Actually, the band is ensconced in the dingy storage room next door, which they have turned into a makeshift shrine to the 1970s — patchouli incense, wood paneling and vintage vinyl — that befits their retro three-guitar sound.

Midlake Working on Follow-up to Van Occupanther

Midlake Well, the headline pretty much says it all... But after touring, touring, and touring some more behind the success of their breakthrough album of 2006, The Trials of Van Occupanther, Midlake are back in Denton, TX working on album number three. The band posted a MySpace bulletin over the weekend which included the following:
so we have finished touring for VAN OCCUPANTHER, had a few months home, enjoyed the holidays, and are now working hard on the next album.

...

we will not be playing any shows for quite awhile as we will be working on the album, but we hope that you will all be ready to see us after a nice long break and that you will not have forgotten about us. in the meantime, we hope everyone is well, and that 2008 has gotten off to a good start.

"Recorded entirely under solar power," Brightblack Morning Light like things like tee-pees, headbands and most likely hallucinogenic drugs. More solar power to 'em. Their second album of slow motion hippie blues, Motion to Rejoin, is due September 23rd on Matador. [DOWNLOAD]

Consider Rook essential summer listening. Like your "Summer Reading" list, Rook isn't really "summer-y" at all. It's heavy, dense, dramatic and beautiful and dark. Four of those five adjectives actually DO apply to summer, come to think of it... - jimtarnation  [READ REVIEW]
