Full Album Stream: The Hold Steady - Stay Positive

The Hold Steady The zeitgeist that surrounded the Hold Steady's third LP, Boys and Girls in America, was surprising considering the dominant trends in music in 2006. Obviously, that was what made it stick out like a sore thumb: bar band rock, hyper-literate lyrics, and a tip of the hat to the Boss.

Now, fully cemented and no longer under the radar, the band will release their highly anticipated follow-up on July 15th. Preview Stay Positive on the band's MySpace page.

The Hold Steady The Hold Steady have given us our first preview of their forthcoming Stay Positive with "Sequestered in Memphis." The lead single is streaming on the band's MySpace page and doesn't stray too far from the bar band sound that landed them on 2006 "best of" lists with Boys and Girls in America.

The Hold Steady Reveal Stay Positive Details

Hold Steady Indie rock's unlikely breakout "bar band" of 2006, the Hold Steady, will follow-up their Bruce Springsteen infused Boys and Girls in America, which garnered praise from everyone from Rolling Stone to your blog, on July 15th through Vagrant Records. Stay Positive features guest appearances from J. Mascis and Doug Gillard of Guided By Voices among others. (via Billboard)
"There's less party talk," frontman Craig Finn tells Billboard.com of the new material. "I don't think anything is a radical departure, but there are things that I wanted to talk about. I was influenced a lot [by] getting old, and attempting to age gracefully. The idea is to not wake up washed up. You want to keep progressing, intellectually."

Indeed, tunes such as the slow, bluesy ballad "Lord, I'm Discouraged" and "Stay Positive" see Finn's narratives reflecting on themes of maturity. Fans will also notice that the band has opted to change up its sound on some tunes, opting for a harpsichord on "One for the Cutters" and a banjo on "Both Crosses."
The Hold Steady - Stay Positive Tracklist:

1. Constructive Summer
2. Sequestered in Memphis
3. One for the Cutters
4. Navy Sheets
5. Lord, I'm Discouraged
6. Yeah Sapphire
7. Both Crosses
8. Stay Positive
9. Magazines
10. Joke About Jamaica
11. Slapped Actress

"Recorded entirely under solar power," Brightblack Morning Light like things like tee-pees, headbands and most likely hallucinogenic drugs. More solar power to 'em. Their second album of slow motion hippie blues, Motion to Rejoin, is due September 23rd on Matador. [DOWNLOAD]

Featured Review

Consider Rook essential summer listening. Like your "Summer Reading" list, Rook isn't really "summer-y" at all. It's heavy, dense, dramatic and beautiful and dark. Four of those five adjectives actually DO apply to summer, come to think of it... - jimtarnation  [READ REVIEW]
