Scorsese to Direct Bob Marley Documentary

Bob Marley The list of forthcoming Martin Scorsese rock-docs keeps getting longer. Impending Scorsese directed subjects include the Rolling Stones in Shine A Light, which opens on April 4th, an unnamed George Harrison documentary, and now news of a Bob Marley chronicle (via CMJ):
A quarter-century since the passing of Bob Marley, the reggae legend's family has maintained a strict policy on licensing his music. Although his songs have been freely licensed to many commercials, TV shows and movies, none of his work has appeared in documentaries or biopics with an actor portraying the icon. But alas, Martin Scorsese was recently granted the exclusive rights to use Marley's music in an upcoming doc to be released in February 2010.

Ladyhawk Vancouver's Ladyhawk are the subject of Rob Leickner and Mona Mok's forthcoming documentary Let Me Be Fictional. The film follows the band as they tour and "face their past, uniquely deal with society's view of what makes a functioning adult and consume vast quantities of sangria during the process of recording their second album, Shots." The band's excellent sophomore full-length, Shots, is due via Jagjaguwar on March 4th.

Dylan's Newport Performances Coming to DVD

Welcome to the autumn of Bob Dylan. Earlier this month, various forms of the compilation Dylan were released and on October 30th both the soundtrack to the forthcoming Dylan biopic, I'm Not There (which debuts on November 30th), and a DVD of Dylan's Newport performances are released.

The Other Side of the Mirror: Live at Newport Folk Festival 1963-1965 is the first official full release of the Newport appearances and, of course, includes that fateful night in '65 when Dylan changed it all. Definitely looking forward to finally seeing that full performance of "Like a Rolling Stone." Enjoy the trailer...

Flaming Lips' Christmas on Mars to Debut at SXSW ‘08

Wayne Coyne We've heard it all before, but Wayne Coyne tells Billboard that it's for real this time. The Flaming Lips' long-in-the-works sci-fi epic, Christmas on Mars, should premiere in March at South By Southwest in Austin:
"It is coming," Coyne promises. "In fact, it's better than ever. Because it's taken so long, we've become better filmmakers. There's better computer effects. I think it will be much better."

Coyne says the Lips are currently working on final editing and transferring the film into a High Definition format, adding "some in-depth special effects" in the process. Once it's premiered, he envisions taking "Christmas on Mars" on a kind of "tour;" rather than simply showing it in theaters, Coyne wants to hold special screenings to give fans "a Flaming Lips experience of another kind." [Read More]
Coyne also hints at a follow up to At War With the Mystics:
"I have ideas I think could spur a great new Flaming Lips concept and a new sound and things like that," Coyne, says. "But I feel like we have to finish 'Christmas on Mars' before we jump into anything else. Hopefully we'll be able to do that next year, though."
First things first...

Scorsese Working on George Harrison Documentary

George Harrison Here's hoping Martin Scorcese's rock-doc on the "quiet Beatle" has more in common with his fantastic study of Bob Dylan, No Direction Home, than his forthcoming Rolling Stones flick, Shine a Light. Seeing how George Harrison isn't around to embarrass himself by dirty dancing on stage with Christina Aguilera (not that he would've anyway), we'll bet on it being a classy and well-produced chronicle of the "Dark Horse." (via Billboard)
"Harrison's music and his search for spiritual meaning is a story that still resonates today and I'm looking forward to delving deeper," Scorsese said in a statement. "It would have given George great joy to know that Martin Scorsese has agreed to tell his story," added Harrison's widow, Olivia.

Work is already underway assembling archival material for the film, which will also feature extensive interviews.

The Who's Amazing Journey Documentary Due Nov. 6

Through rare live footage and interviews with the likes of Sting, Eddie Vedder, U2's the Edge and Noel Gallagher (boooooring), producer Nigel Sinclair tells the story of the Who's climb to the top of stadium rock mountain in Amazing Journey: The Story of The Who—due on DVD on November 6th. (via Billboard)
"We decided the film was really about the journey to the top," producer Nigel Sinclair tells Billboard.com. "You really see these four young people putting it together. Then, the band becomes successful and many things happen: some good and some bad. We discerned from it that the most interesting thing was the evolution of Pete and Roger's relationship. The fact that these two are able to continue as the Who, it is almost like it was meant to be that way. Discovering, as we did from interviewing them, what the magic or their working partnership was, that was very exciting." [Read More]

Kurt Cobain Documentary Hitting Theaters in October

Kurt Cobain: About A Son For the upcoming Kurt Cobain documentary, Kurt Cobain: About A Son, director AJ Schnack sorted through 25 hours of audio interviews conducted by author Michael Azerrad for the book Come As You Are: The Story of Nirvana and "merged them with newly filmed, evocative imagery of the three cities in Washington state that played a major role in Cobain's life: Aberdeen, Olympia and Seattle." The film opens in theaters in New York on October 3, Los Angeles on October 5 and Seattle on October 12. More about the film:
The film is not a documentary about Nirvana, the band Kurt fronted, nor is it even a documentary in the traditional sense, but a profound, almost dream-like account of Cobain's own successes and failures, thoughts and experiences, allowing the audience unprecedented intimacy with a legendary figure in popular culture.
Barsuk is set to release the film's soundtrack on September 11th. Along with excerpts of the Azerrad interviews and original music by Ben Gibbard and Steve Fisk, the soundtrack includes tracks from some of Cobain's biggest influences including David Bowie, Iggy Pop, R.E.M., and the Vaselines. More information on the soundtrack here.

Video: Scorsese's Shine A Light Trailer

According to the film's official website, the Rolling Stones/Martin Scorsese documentary, Shine A Light, has been pushed back to a 2008 release date and our first look at the trailer has us both delighted and disappointed. Among the pros are behind the scenes wheeling and dealing and great cinematography (duh!). The cons include Mick grinding Christina Aguilera on stage.

Although we've read "career-spanning documentary" numerous times, it appears that very little biographical footage will be included and the film will focus on the Stones' 2006 two-night stand at the Beacon Theater in NYC. So, yeah... it's a concert film featuring a once great band... certainly not in their prime. We will always have Gimme Shelter, however.

Dylan Biopic, I'm Not There, Trailer and Release Date

I'm Not There The New York Times is reporting that the Todd Haynes directed Bob Dylan biopic, I'm Not There, will open in New York at the tiny art-house cinema Film Forum on November 21st. Harvey Weinstein tells the Times:
"With a movie like this you have to build it," said Mr. Weinstein, who founded the company with his brother, Bob, two years ago after an acrimonious split from the Walt Disney Company saw them relinquish control of Miramax. "I don't think you can go out on 500 screens. The reason for Film Forum is you go where the best word of mouth is on the movie. I like the movie; I think it's adventurous. The audience is going to have to work — work in a good way."
Here's a first look at the trailer:

And if you'd prefer a higher quality version...

QuickTime: I'm Not There Trailer (24.4 MB)

Dylan is portrayed by six different actors including Cate Blanchett, Richard Gere, Christian Bale and Heath Ledger through various stages of his life. Here's a look at Blanchett's mid-sixties Dylan meeting David Cross's kooky Allen Ginsberg:

Consider Rook essential summer listening. Like your "Summer Reading" list, Rook isn't really "summer-y" at all. It's heavy, dense, dramatic and beautiful and dark. Four of those five adjectives actually DO apply to summer, come to think of it... - jimtarnation  [READ REVIEW]
