Video: Cat Power in the Studio

Cat Power Excited about Jukebox? Yeah, us too. The New Yorker's Sasha Frere-Jones? He's lukewarm:
Still, the album drags in places, whereas "The Greatest" snapped and burned. Marshall's voice and the band members' instruments have been mixed with an unusual amount of echo; sometimes the effect evokes an empty club at 3 A.M., but sometimes it seems to sap energy from the performances. Ahhh, what does that guy know? Not much...

We'll take this clip of Chan laying down some velvety vocals on "Dark End of the Street" as a sign of good things to come.

Jukebox is out January 22nd on Matador.

MP3: Cat Power - "Song to Bobby"

Cat Power - Jukebox Today, Matablog did us all a favor sharing a preview of Cat Power's forthcoming Jukebox—76 days in advance of its January 22nd release date. What's more, the appetizer comes in the form of Chan Marshall's tribute to Bob Dylan and the only new Marshall penned tune on the album. Enjoy!

Update: Boo! Matador decided to make some scratch on this and are hawking the song on the iTunes Music Store.

Cat Power Announces Jukebox Tracklist

Cat Power No longer titled Covers Record 2, Chan Marshall has unveiled the artwork and tracklisting for her second (mostly) covers album, Jukebox. Perhaps the name change was due to the fact that the record includes two Chan originals—"Metal Heart" and "Song To Bobby." The latter is a tribute to Dylan, of course.

Cat Power – Jukebox Tracklist:

1. Theme From 'New York, New York' - (Written by Fred Ebb/John Kander)
2. Metal Heart - (Written by Chan Marshall)
3. Ramblin' (Wo)man - (Written by Hank Williams)
4. Song To Bobby - (Written by Chan Marshall)
5. Aretha, Sing One For Me - (Written by J Harris/Eugene William)
6. Lost Someone - (Written by James Brown/Bobby Byrd/Lloyd Stallworth)
7. I Believe In You - (Written by Bob Dylan)
8. Fortunate Son - (Written by John Fogerty)
9. Silver Stallion - (Written by Lee Clayton)
10. Dark End of the Street - (Written by Chips Moman/Dan Penn)
11. Don't Explain - (Written by Arthur Herzog, Jr./Billie Holiday)
12. Woman Left Lonely - (Written by Spooner Oldham/Dan Penn)

Jukebox is slated for a January 22, 2008 release via Matador.

Cat Power to Release Covers Record 2

Cat Power Chan's been bloggin' over at her MySpace page and has revealed news of her next record—a follow-up to 2000's Covers Record entitled... Covers Record 2. Marshall posts that there are "24 covers to choose from" and that mixing is set to begin shortly. The record is tentatively set for a January '08 release.

Fans of Chan's 30-second take on Cat Stevens' "How Can I Tell You" from the De Beers diamond commercial shouldn't get their hopes up for a full version. In another post Marshall says she's "not decided if How can I tell you will ever be recorded more than the 30 secs used for the commercial" and that "the only time you wll most likely hear that song is in between yr fav sitcoms."

Consider Rook essential summer listening. Like your "Summer Reading" list, Rook isn't really "summer-y" at all. It's heavy, dense, dramatic and beautiful and dark. Four of those five adjectives actually DO apply to summer, come to think of it... - jimtarnation  [READ REVIEW]
