Video: Bowerbirds - "In Our Talons"

Originally signed to Burly Time Records in 2007, Bowerbirds jumped shipped due to poor distribution and opted to re-issue their debut full-length, Hymns for a Dark Horse, on Dead Oceans back in June. It's a fantastic album of eco-inspired folk that was sadly lost in the shuffle. The band's back in our spotlight with an incredibly moving video for "In Our Talons." Don't expect to be proud of the human race after viewing. :'-(

Bowerbirds Sign to Dead Oceans

Bowerbirds Bowerbirds released one of the biggest surprises of 2007 with their splendid Hymns for a Dark Horse. Too bad no one got the opportunity to buy it at record stores. The North Carolina trio split with Burly Time Records presumably after the startup indie label couldn't handle that whole distribution part of the job. Bowerbirds now call Dead Oceans home according to the band's MySpace page:
We have signed to our favorite US record label, Dead Oceans, home to such bands as Dirty Projectors, White Hinterland, Evangelicals, Citay, Phosphorescent, and Bishop Allen. Dead Oceans is a relatively new sister label to Jagjaguwar and Secretly Canadian. We are very pleased to be added to their roster.

Dead Oceans will re-release Hymns for a Dark Horse, the album we sort of released last summer, but which never made it to more than 8 or so record stores in the whole United States. They will release it on CD and vinyl! and put it in stores nationwide this late spring -- and the new version will come with two secret bonus tracks that have never been recorded! They will also release another new album by us, later this year. The music will also be released internationally, for our friends far and wide

"Recorded entirely under solar power," Brightblack Morning Light like things like tee-pees, headbands and most likely hallucinogenic drugs. More solar power to 'em. Their second album of slow motion hippie blues, Motion to Rejoin, is due September 23rd on Matador. [DOWNLOAD]

Consider Rook essential summer listening. Like your "Summer Reading" list, Rook isn't really "summer-y" at all. It's heavy, dense, dramatic and beautiful and dark. Four of those five adjectives actually DO apply to summer, come to think of it... - jimtarnation  [READ REVIEW]
