Beirut Announces New Album

Beirut Zach Condon and his band of gypsies will drop their sophomore effort on October 9th via Ba Da Bing! records. Condon recently told Pitchfork not to expect the familiar Balkan folk of his debut:
I was listening to a lot of Jacques Brel and French chanson music-- pop songs shrouded in big, glorious, over-the-top arrangements and all this drama-- and that was in some sense unfamiliar territory to me. So I started buying new instruments and relying on things I wasn't necessarily comfortable with, like French horns and euphoniums, carrying these big, epic big brass parts that I used to do all on trumpets, and working with accordion and organ instead of all ukulele-- very much throwing myself in the world of classical pop music, I guess you could say.
The album may or may not be titled The Flying Club Cup according to P4K and apparently opens with a hidden track #0. That may not work out so well for a vinyl release.

The tracklist:

0. A Call to Arms
1. Nantes
2. A Sunday Smile
3. Guyamas Sonora
4. La Banlieu
5. Cliquot
6. The Penalty
7. Forks and Knives (La Fête)
8. In the Mausoleum
9. Un Dernier Verre (Pour la Route)
10. Cherbourg
11. St. Apollonia
12. The Flying Club Cup

Pre-Beirut Zach Condon MP3's

Zach Condon
Zach's lost weight
I Guess I'm Floating has scored some pre-Beirut MP3's that date back to 2001. Zach Condon goes under the moniker The Real People for a batch of untitled songs on the unreleased album, The Joys Of Losing Weight.
It pre-dates all of his work with Beirut and does not bear any influence of the Balkan/Eastern Gypsy sound that he has become reknowned [sic] and critically acclaimed for; however, it's a highly precocious album that's steeped in amazing melodies draped against a backdrop of synthesized electronica...

"Recorded entirely under solar power," Brightblack Morning Light like things like tee-pees, headbands and most likely hallucinogenic drugs. More solar power to 'em. Their second album of slow motion hippie blues, Motion to Rejoin, is due September 23rd on Matador. [DOWNLOAD]

Consider Rook essential summer listening. Like your "Summer Reading" list, Rook isn't really "summer-y" at all. It's heavy, dense, dramatic and beautiful and dark. Four of those five adjectives actually DO apply to summer, come to think of it... - jimtarnation  [READ REVIEW]
