Did Coldplay Rip Off Some Brooklyn Band?

Coincidence or thievery? Creaky Boards frontman Andrew Hoepfner claims the latter, alleging that Chris Martin attended the band's October 2007 CMJ performance where they played "The Songs I Didn't Write," which unquestionably sounds an awful lot like Coldpaly's iTunes smash hit "Viva La Vida." Of course, Coldplay denies the claim. Ok, so it's probably not true. Shit happens when you only have 12 notes to work with. (via NME)

Video: Wayne Coyne Explains Christmas on Mars

Flaming Lips ringleader Wayne Coyne expounds on the inspiration for Christmas on Mars, amongst several other interesting tidbits—all of this as a tornado siren howls in the background. The man is unflappable. It's interesting to note that the seven year film project was intended to follow The Soft Bulletin.

Calexico to Play in Outer Space

Space Shuttle Calexico won't physically be orbiting in space, but their music will! Friends and family of space shuttle Discovery astronauts get to play DJ by choosing songs to wake the astronauts each morning and one such family member is a fan.

Shuttle commander Mark Kelly's wife, Arizona Representative Gabrielle Giffords, has chosen two songs: the bugle call from her husband's days at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy (that song is so 19th century) and Calexico's "Crystal Frontier" from the Tuscon band's 2001 odds and ends collection, Aerocalexico.

This momentous event will occur on June 13th but you can make it happen now, here on lame ol' Earth, buy checking out the tune below. This is pretty sweet intergalactic publicity considering Calexico have a brand new record, Carried To Dust, coming out on September 9th via Touch & Go.

Of Montreal's Skeletal Lamping Due in October

Kevin Barnes Kevin Barnes dropped news sure to excite indie music fans and ad execs the world over today on Of Montreal's MySpace blog. His follow-up to last year's wildly successful Hissing Fauna, Are You the Destroyer? should hit record store shelves sometime in October—which means it'll materialize on some dudes blog in late summer. It's called Skeletal Lamping and it's all about "capturing the labyrinthine complexity of this human consciousness." So says Mr. Barnes:
i've finished the new album. i've been working on it for over a year. it's mastered and ready to go.

it won't come out till october though. i am very happy with it. i worry that some people are going to misunderstand it. there's nothing i can do about that though, now, it is done. anyways,i didn't create it to give people something to like. i created it because i was compelled to.

Full Album Stream: The Hold Steady - Stay Positive

The Hold Steady The zeitgeist that surrounded the Hold Steady's third LP, Boys and Girls in America, was surprising considering the dominant trends in music in 2006. Obviously, that was what made it stick out like a sore thumb: bar band rock, hyper-literate lyrics, and a tip of the hat to the Boss.

Now, fully cemented and no longer under the radar, the band will release their highly anticipated follow-up on July 15th. Preview Stay Positive on the band's MySpace page.

MP3: Sebadoh - "Soul and Fire (Acoustic Demo)"

Sebadoh As the 10 and 15 year anniversaries for '90s indie classics keep coming, more and more are getting the deluxe reissue treatment. Coming hot on the heels of Liz Phair's Exile in Guyville is Sebadoh's 1993 LP Bubble and Scrape.

The band's chaotic fifth album marked the end of Eric Gaffney's tenure and the emergence of Lou Barlow as tortured love balladeer. The 32-track two-disc reissue lands on July 8th via Sub Pop. Of the 15 bonus tracks, one can be sampled below in Barlow's demo for lead-off track "Soul and Fire."

Full Album Stream: The New Sigur Ros Album

Sigur Ros Last week we espoused our love of Sigur Ros' first single and video, "Gobbledigook," from the forthcoming Með suð í eyrum við spilum endalaust. Since we won't ever be able to comfortably pronounce that title, we've taken to calling it "The Naked Dudes Hurdling a Highway Guard Rail Album." It just rolls off the tongue easier. Stream the entire album on the previously posted widget.

"Recorded entirely under solar power," Brightblack Morning Light like things like tee-pees, headbands and most likely hallucinogenic drugs. More solar power to 'em. Their second album of slow motion hippie blues, Motion to Rejoin, is due September 23rd on Matador. [DOWNLOAD]

Featured Review

Consider Rook essential summer listening. Like your "Summer Reading" list, Rook isn't really "summer-y" at all. It's heavy, dense, dramatic and beautiful and dark. Four of those five adjectives actually DO apply to summer, come to think of it... - jimtarnation  [READ REVIEW]
