Liz Phair to Return With "Sloppy" New Album

Liz Phair Loved for the lo-fi simplicity of her mid-90s output and despised for the sad attempts at commercial success of her glossy '00s bombs, Liz Phair tells Billboard that she's returning to form following the 15th anniversary reissue of her debut album, Exile in Guyville.
"This I can tell you: all my sloppiness is in there," she tells Billboard of her ATO debut, due this fall. "I fought all the way through, and I'm not letting anyone take it to a perfected style.

"It's not going to be '[Exile in] Guyville' again, but I'm using all my tools," she continues. "I keep pulling it out of producers' hands, before they can do anything."

Phair concedes that so far she's confident in about "half of it," but will be busy with the album all through August. The best way I can describe it is 'natural,'" she says. "It has mistakes in it. It has layered background vocals of mine that just make an overall slop, but it's perfect slop."

Video: The Breeders - "Walk it Off"

The kooky first video from the Breeders' Mountain Battles features split-screened performances of a determined bike messenger, a business man who hates packages, a shirtless dude who likes to chill out in refrigerator boxes, and the band hanging out on a sidewalk. More or less, exactly the visuals you imagine when listening to "Walk it Off."

Video: Beck - "Orphans"

Beck's back sporting his mysterious mad-hatted Modern Guilt look in the no-nonsense video for "Orphans"—the second visual interpretation of his latest LP. Listen close enough and you can hear Cat Power's Chan Marshall ooh-ing and ah-ing angelic backing vocals over the psychedelic backdrop.

Video: She & Him - "Why Do You Let Me Stay Here?"

Zooey Deschanel couples her musical abilities with her photogenic qualities in this playfully morbid video for "Why Do You Let Me Stay Here?" from She & Him's debut album Volume One. What are we forgetting... Oh, yes! That M. Ward guy is in the video for a few seconds.

Volume One is out now on Merge.

Stream: Of Montreal - "Gallery Piece" from Skeletal Lamping

Of Montreal We're not totally sure if this is the entirety of "Gallery Piece" or not. But it does sound like there is a quick fade over a drum machine break at the end which would, presumably, segue into "Women's Studies Victims." Kevin Barnes definitely has the funk on this first glimpse at Skeletal Lamping and he wants to do all kinds of dirty things to you... 200 times a day!

UPDATE: "Gallery Piece" seems to have mysteriously vanished from the website Fairtilizer-- where it was streaming. La Baleine Distribution handles the delivery of things Of Montreal in France and it appears they may have jumped the gun in posting the song.

"Recorded entirely under solar power," Brightblack Morning Light like things like tee-pees, headbands and most likely hallucinogenic drugs. More solar power to 'em. Their second album of slow motion hippie blues, Motion to Rejoin, is due September 23rd on Matador. [DOWNLOAD]

Featured Review

Consider Rook essential summer listening. Like your "Summer Reading" list, Rook isn't really "summer-y" at all. It's heavy, dense, dramatic and beautiful and dark. Four of those five adjectives actually DO apply to summer, come to think of it... - jimtarnation  [READ REVIEW]
