Wolfmother Breakup... Kind Of

Wolfmother Wolfmother just got divided by three. Drummer Myles Heskett and keyboardist/bassist Chris Ross have announced their departure from the band due to "longstanding frictions within the group" leaving singer/guitarist Andrew Stockdale as the lone wolf. Stockdale now plans to recruit other musicians to begin recording a follow-up to the band's 2006 self-titled album. (via Wolfmother.com)

Julian Koster Announces The Singing Saw at Christmastime

The Singing Saw at Christmastime We haven't heard much from Julian Koster over the past nine years, but the Elephant 6 multi-instrumentalist wizard is making 2008 the year of the singing saw. First came news of the Music Tapes follow-up to 1999's First Imaginary Symphony for Nomad with the 9 years in the making Music Tapes for Clouds and Tornadoes—out August 19th on Merge.

Now there's news of another Koster project: The Singing Saw Orchestra. Koster and friend Nesey Gallons interpret Christmas classics via their spooky metal friends on The Singing Saw at Christmastime—due October 7th also on Merge. Julian reminds us to keep in mind that "Singing Saws sing all by themselves. The idea that a Human Being could play one, as one might a cello or a tuba, is a common misconception perpetuated by the saws themselves for their own amusement."

The Singing Saw at Christmastime Tracklist:

1. The First Noel
2. Frosty The Snowman
3. Silent Night
4. Santa Claus Is Coming To Town
5. Jingle Bells
6. White Christmas
7. Silver Bells
8. Hark! The Herald Angels Sing
9. O' Come All Ye Faithful
10. O' Holy Night
11. O' Little Town Of Bethlehem
12. We Wish You A Merry Christmas

Blitzen Trapper Announce Fourth LP, Stream New Track

Blitzen Trapper - Furr Blitzen Trapper will make their Sub Pop debut with their fourth album, Furr, on September 23rd. Conceived while touring in support of their 2007 breakout album, Wild Mountain Nation, and recorded at the band's studio at Sally Mack's School of Dance, Furr was primarily written on a borrowed old upright piano:
One key to this new material was an ancient, warped piano that appeared in the hallway one day at Sally Mack’s School of Dance and which was subsequently muscled into the group’s studio. Though out of tune and missing teeth, this piano became the warhorse upon which Earley wrote and recorded much of Furr. The beast has gone away to the landfill now, but you can still hear the clacking and clattering of its rickety skeleton in songs like “Not Your Lover” and “Echo.”
Stream the title track on the Urban Outfitters blog and download the 21-track mix LSTN #1, which the store's website calls, "for lack of a better word, a banger." Ugh...

Blitzen Trapper - Furr Tracklist:

1. Sleepytime in the Western World
2. Gold for Bread
3. Furr
4. God & Suicide
5. Fire & Fast Bullets
6. Saturday Nite
7. Black River Killer
8. Not Your Lover
9. Love U
10. War on Machines
11. Stolen Shoes & a Rifle
12. Echo/Always On/EZ Con
13. Lady on the Water

The Walkmen's You & Me Available Now for $5

The Walkmen Not only are the Walkmen unveiling their 4th proper album, You & Me, three weeks in advance of its August 19th release date for $5, but all proceeds go to the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in honor of seven-month-old leukemia patient Luca Vasallo:
Why did you choose to direct proceeds from this album to Sloan-Kettering?

Some friends of mine, Greg and Manal Vassallo, whose son Luca was diagnosed with AML leukemia, have spent a lot of time there and constantly sing its praises. The money will be donated both toward the research centers at the hospital and to the Joy fund which helps provide patients who are spending a lot of time in the pediatric center with all sorts of different activities, entertainment and help. Luca, Greg and Manal are all extremely strong, resilient, and loving people and I immediately thought of them when this whole thing was brought up. They suggested that we contact Sloan-Kettering.

Consider Rook essential summer listening. Like your "Summer Reading" list, Rook isn't really "summer-y" at all. It's heavy, dense, dramatic and beautiful and dark. Four of those five adjectives actually DO apply to summer, come to think of it... - jimtarnation  [READ REVIEW]
