The Hold Steady Reveal Stay Positive Details

Hold Steady Indie rock's unlikely breakout "bar band" of 2006, the Hold Steady, will follow-up their Bruce Springsteen infused Boys and Girls in America, which garnered praise from everyone from Rolling Stone to your blog, on July 15th through Vagrant Records. Stay Positive features guest appearances from J. Mascis and Doug Gillard of Guided By Voices among others. (via Billboard)
"There's less party talk," frontman Craig Finn tells Billboard.com of the new material. "I don't think anything is a radical departure, but there are things that I wanted to talk about. I was influenced a lot [by] getting old, and attempting to age gracefully. The idea is to not wake up washed up. You want to keep progressing, intellectually."

Indeed, tunes such as the slow, bluesy ballad "Lord, I'm Discouraged" and "Stay Positive" see Finn's narratives reflecting on themes of maturity. Fans will also notice that the band has opted to change up its sound on some tunes, opting for a harpsichord on "One for the Cutters" and a banjo on "Both Crosses."
The Hold Steady - Stay Positive Tracklist:

1. Constructive Summer
2. Sequestered in Memphis
3. One for the Cutters
4. Navy Sheets
5. Lord, I'm Discouraged
6. Yeah Sapphire
7. Both Crosses
8. Stay Positive
9. Magazines
10. Joke About Jamaica
11. Slapped Actress

Fiery Furnaces to Release Massive Live Album

Fiery Furnaces If you've ever been to a Fiery Furnaces concert you know that they take certain liberties with their recorded material and depending on who they have in tow, their sound can vary widely. But, whether they sound like the Stones, Yes, or a Cuban dance band on a particular night, it's still most likely a great experience.

So, it makes perfect sense that they would release a live album. But not just any live album: one that's been culled since 2005 and features 51 tracks on two discs! Ahhhh, the Fiery Furnaces. Still keepin' it weird. The album is called Remember and you can get a load of the full tracklist here.

Check out the Furnaces live in Amsterdam in this high quality video shot on November 29, 2007:

Wolf Parade LP2 Finally Gets Title

Wolf Parade Whether or not it was the backlash or the fact that it shared its title with a 1997 Jonathan Carroll novel, but Wolf Parade's second album will not be called Kissing the Beehive. (via Billboard)
"We didn't know that was the title of a book," Krug explains. "We might have to change it, but we might not. And we'll have to make it clear that it's not [named] after his book. It's a complicated situation."
The band has settled on At Mount Zoomer because, well... it was recorded at their studio, Mount Zoomer. And as for the direction:
"We had an idea of what it should sound like -- a more deliberate approach to make it sound in a way of having more space, in terms of music, frequencies and tones," he says of the tentatively titled "Kissing the Beehive," due June 17. "When I listen [to it], I can hear that deliberation."

Krug says Wolf Parade "did a bunch of free jams, for lack of a better word. And we listened back and would scroll around. The ideas would come out, and we'd solidify it and structure it and take a couple of cool parts and paste them together."

Christmas on Mars With the premiere of the Flaming Lips' long-awaited Christmas on Mars right around the corner, sneak peaks at the sci-fi epic are popping up on the YouTubes. A couple of weeks ago a short clip touting the film's "Zeta Bootis Mega Supersonic Super-Sound Surround System" appeared.

Now we're treated to an outtake of the on-screen chemistry of Modest Mouse's Isaac Brock and a dour Adam Goldberg in this gripping scene:

Lackthereof (Menomena's Danny Seim) Sign To Barsuk

Lackthereof The latest addition to the Barsuk roster comes from offspring of another of the label's acts. Menomena drummer/vocalist Danny Seim's Lackthereof has been floating under the blog radar so far after self-releasing six CD-R's followed by 2004's Christian the Christian and the vinyl/digital only My Haunted (2008)—both on FILMguerrero. According to the label, Lackthereof isn't a Menomena side project but rather it's the other way around.
Danny Seim began the Lackthereof project in 1997. His other band Menomena started as a side project in 2000, and took over because Seim felt less self-conscious as a drummer than as a singer-songwriter.
Lackthereof's Your Anchor will be available in July and you can sample a few tracks on some website called MySpace. For an idea of where Seim may draw musical inspiration from check out the On The List feature he did for us back when Menomena's Friend and Foe was sweeping the indie nation.

Lackthereof - Your Anchor Tracklist:

1. Chest Pass
2. Fire Trial
3. Choir Practice
4. Doomed Elephants
5. Locked Upstairs
6. Last November
7. Ask Permission
8. You Can
9. Vacant Eyes
10. Fake Empire

MP3: Bonnie 'Prince' Billy - "So Everyone" (Demo)

Bonnie Prince Billy Hearing Will Oldham in his most minimal, lo-fi state can't help but render us nostalgic for those Palace records of the early '90s. This hissing little blueprint gives us a taste of what Oldham has in store for us on his forthcoming Lie Down in the Light—due in May on Drag City.

Consider Rook essential summer listening. Like your "Summer Reading" list, Rook isn't really "summer-y" at all. It's heavy, dense, dramatic and beautiful and dark. Four of those five adjectives actually DO apply to summer, come to think of it... - jimtarnation  [READ REVIEW]
