Is Denton, TX Indie Rock's Next Austin?

Midlake The New York Times profiles the Denton, Texas indie music scene—home of University of North Texas's College of Music and, of course, Midlake:
WITH its Piggly Wiggly markets and dusty pawnshops, the Texas college town of Denton does not look the part of a Woodstock in waiting. A Romanesque courthouse juts out of the central square, as in that fictional town in “Back to the Future.” And whenever the local college football team plays at Fouts Field, the entire town seems to put on Mean Green T-shirts.

But wander into the Panhandle House, a barnlike recording studio on North Locust Street, and you’ll find Midlake, a five-person band whose music the British newspaper The Guardian has called “a dreamy concoction of Neil Young, Fleetwood Mac, Tom Petty and the Yardbirds.” Actually, the band is ensconced in the dingy storage room next door, which they have turned into a makeshift shrine to the 1970s — patchouli incense, wood paneling and vintage vinyl — that befits their retro three-guitar sound.

Radiohead Denounce Forthcoming Greatest Hits Album

Radiohead Thom Yorke is speaking out against EMI's plans to release a Radiohead greatest hits album this summer. (via NME)
We haven't really had any hits so what exactly is the purpose?"

He added: "There's nothing we can do about it. The work is really public property now anyway, in my head at least. It's a wasted opportunity in that if we'd been behind it, and we wanted to do it, then it might have been good."

Speaking about moving away from EMI he said: "Personally I just wanted to forget about it. It didn't feel right. And now it's like when you move house: you don't want to peer through the window and see what they've done with the wallpaper because it will only upset you."

Video: Gnarls Barkley - "Going On"

Avoiding the seizure inducing psychedelics behind, Gnarls Barkley opt for a more introspective tone in this video for their brief second single, "Going On," from the Odd Couple.

Beck In a move similar to the Raconteurs surprise release of Consolers of the Lonely, Beck will reportedly drop his latest "at any time" according to Billboard. Pitchfork digs a little deeper and reports that Cat Power's Chan Marshall will appear in some form or fashion on the as-yet untitled 10-track Danger Mouse produced album.

Video: Scarlett Johansson - "Falling Down" (Tom Waits Cover)

When news broke that Scarlett Johansson was releasing a Tom Waits cover album we were sure it was some kind of a hoax. Surely Miss Johansson wouldn't be narcissistic enough to think that that would be a good idea. Well, as you know by now 'tis true and Anywhere I Lay My Head lands on May 20th. As easy on the eyes as she may be, we're not so sure Woody Allen's latest muse will get the same props Zooey Deschanel did.

Stream: Miles Kurosky (Beulah) - "An Apple for an Apple"

Miles Kurosky It's like Christmas for fans of late '90s Elephant 6 ear candy (see Music Tapes report). Former Beulah frontman, Miles Kurosky, popped up on MySpace yesterday with a new tune and a blog post announcing as much:
Hello Friends, it's May 5th and I'm officially on Myspace. How did I ever live without it?? Anyway, I've posted a song called "An Apple for an Apple." I think it's the final version, but who knows, it could change. Hopefully you all like it. That's all, XO, M.
There's no mention of a record, a release date, or a label so stay tuned...

Music Tapes To Release First Album In 9 Years

Music Tapes Elephant 6 fans rejoice! Julian Koster, the man-child behind every eerie singing saw warble in the E6 canon, will return under his moniker Music Tapes with Music Tapes For Clouds and Tornadoes on August 19th via Merge. It's Julian's first release since 1999's First Imaginary Symphony for Nomad and we'll let him sum it up:
I just find the imaginary more real than the physical. Magic, the way we find things beautiful, the light behind eyes, kindness, and how we want to serve and protect the things we care about - these things seem like the real foundation of the world to me. I hope that the songs on this record can be more than just postcards from a world, but an invitation to it, to anyone at all who may find such a place comforting and nice.
In addition, Merge reports that a "story album," 2nd Imaginary Symphony for Cloudmaking, is in the works. Sample two tracks from Clouds and Tornadoes below—one in the form of an MP3 stream, the other accompanied by suitably wacky visuals.

MP4: Music Tapes - "Majesty"

The Hold Steady Reveal Stay Positive Details

Hold Steady Indie rock's unlikely breakout "bar band" of 2006, the Hold Steady, will follow-up their Bruce Springsteen infused Boys and Girls in America, which garnered praise from everyone from Rolling Stone to your blog, on July 15th through Vagrant Records. Stay Positive features guest appearances from J. Mascis and Doug Gillard of Guided By Voices among others. (via Billboard)
"There's less party talk," frontman Craig Finn tells Billboard.com of the new material. "I don't think anything is a radical departure, but there are things that I wanted to talk about. I was influenced a lot [by] getting old, and attempting to age gracefully. The idea is to not wake up washed up. You want to keep progressing, intellectually."

Indeed, tunes such as the slow, bluesy ballad "Lord, I'm Discouraged" and "Stay Positive" see Finn's narratives reflecting on themes of maturity. Fans will also notice that the band has opted to change up its sound on some tunes, opting for a harpsichord on "One for the Cutters" and a banjo on "Both Crosses."
The Hold Steady - Stay Positive Tracklist:

1. Constructive Summer
2. Sequestered in Memphis
3. One for the Cutters
4. Navy Sheets
5. Lord, I'm Discouraged
6. Yeah Sapphire
7. Both Crosses
8. Stay Positive
9. Magazines
10. Joke About Jamaica
11. Slapped Actress

Featured Review

Consider Rook essential summer listening. Like your "Summer Reading" list, Rook isn't really "summer-y" at all. It's heavy, dense, dramatic and beautiful and dark. Four of those five adjectives actually DO apply to summer, come to think of it... - jimtarnation  [READ REVIEW]
