Tracks

"Denny, do you have any hash joints left? I know you do... Do you guys feel any acid yet?" - Brian Wilson speaking to the rest of the Boys during the recording of the beautiful intro to SMiLE. Check out the Vigotone bootleg to hear for yourself.
This was the song that changed everything I ever thought about the Bee Gees. The first time I heard it I was completely awestruck.
The opening track of the first truly great Lips record. This album was religion in Norman, OK in the early 90's.
Spacemen 3 defined a mellow psychedelic sound in the late 80’s that is still emulated 20 years later. Jason Pierce went on to make brilliant records as Spiritualized in the 90’s and Sonic Boom went on to be known as “that other guy in Spacemen 3.”
The brightest spot on the dark morality tale that is Axis of Evol.
Leonard Cohen's first album is completely brilliant. That said, I can't imagine this album without John Simon's beautifully creepy production. A match made in heaven with plenty of religious overtones.
VU took it down several notches on their somber third album. This is the first track of the three part religious suite on side two of the album.
Part 2... It's hard to listen to this song without "Jesus" preceding it.
The only Band song that I know of where Robbie Robertson sings lead. Great lyrics too. "False witness cast an evil eye. Said I cannot tell a lie. Kings and saints don't bother me. I'm not alone you see."
Roger McGuinn does a cornball lead vocal on this cover of the Louvin Brothers classic from Satan is Real. Recent re-issues of Sweetheart of the Rodeo include the original Gram Parsons version.
Dylan makes random observations of some surreal street scene from the often overlooked New Morning album. If it just wasn't for the terrible "If Dogs Run Free"...
Paul Siebel made two great records in the early 70's: Woodsmoke and Oranges and Jack-Knife Gypsy. He's now a baker somewhere in Maryland. There's no justice.
Robin's ego was about as big as the production on his first solo album, Robin's Reign. A bizarre record that is, sadly, impossible to find on CD.
Scott 4 is a complete masterpiece that is virtually unknown in America. Thankfully people like Thom Yorke often sing its praises. If you don't own this, change that.
How could I make this mixtape and not include this track? The Dark Horse sings for all religions on this classic Phil Spector produced album.

Staff picked track of the day

Here's our second peak at Wolf Parade's wonderful forthcoming At Mount Zoomer. (See "Call it a Ritual" to catch up.) The Montreal band definitely appears to have avoided the sophomore slump that plagues so many "next big things." Get the album June 17the via Sub Pop. [DOWNLOAD]

In the first few seconds of Awesome Color's second album it's apparent that the Michigan-bred Brooklyn trio's take-no-prisoners approach to pure Motor City rock and roll is more than plain homage. They're proud of their roots... - Ruben_James  [READ REVIEW]
