Spain was the project of Josh Haden, son of noted jazz drummer Charlie Haden, brother of noted indie musicians Petra and Rachel Haden (that dog., The Rentals, etc.), and was one of the few bands to totally luxuriate in what my compadre Dan Pringle described as "the beauty of the open chord." The songs are simple and slow, driven by Haden's distinctive baritone. Thematically, Spain keeps it simple. Quite simply, these are songs to make babies too. They're about lovin', makin' love, & lost loves. Imagine if Bob Dylan wrote a Barry White record, & hired a blue-eyed soul Barry White-esque singer to belt it out, & you get a hint of what Spain was. These songs are beautiful, but lyrically, they're about bumpin uglies.
