the most important band in modern rock. black francis' surrealist approach to songwriting and lyrics combined with joey santiago's blazing virtuocity and kim and dave's brilliantly tight rhythm section has created stunning music far greater than the sum of its parts. when categorizing this band, they have their own genre: surrealist-space-cowboy-surf-punk. the evolution of sound over the course of their five albums shows their ability to grow and mature as artists, but also displays a unified vision and voice throughout. 'come on pilgrim's energetic college coffee house intellectuo-silliness, 'surfer rosa's south of the border firewater dream punk, 'doolittle's surreal pop charm, 'bossanova's soulful desert scape expressionism and 'trompe le monde's intergalactic walkabout rock all combine to form one breathing, soaring, mythological beast that is at once beautifully subtle and boldly scorching. Since their breakup and the subsequent reunion, they have become a powerhouse of new music standards and an influence on just about every new band to emerge in the last decade.
