So many of my important life moments have been soundtracked by this intensely good band. My first year out of college, living and working in the city (Seattle), riding the bus through the glittery night streets, going to shows in dark clubs, toughing it out through a meaningless desk job, but surrounded by friends. All this accompanied by the melancholicly upbeat "Tigermilk." Moving to Los Angeles and navigating my way through the alone-in-a-crowd sun-bleached streets of Hollywood, trying to reconcile my friendship with a raver, attempting to see as much as possible of that cute girl in San Francisco, delivering reels to studio lots. So much time spent in my car listening to "Boy With An Arab Strap's" colorful pastiche of introverted pop (and dreaming of that cute girl in San Francisco.) Moving to San Francisco and living in a victorian apartment in the fog, walking financial district streets to another meaningless desk job, late nights drinking and dancing alone in our room or in a crowd in soma, falling in love with that cute girl. All the while feeling we owned the city and claiming as it's national anthem the entirety of "If You're Feeling Sinister"'s innocent bliss, dirty secrets and artistic whimsy. Now that cute girl and I are married and have introduced a new cute girl into the world. The week after this beautiful creature entered our lives, we discovered the extraordinary pop genius of "The Life Pursuit" and each nugget and masterpiece of song contained therein--a treasure box of costume jewelry, semi-precious gemstones, antique baubles and prismatic diamonds; representative of the band as a whole: a collage of influence re-discovered as an enchanted alternate reality of pop perfection.

This is one of my all-time favorite bands. They 90's music was soft, slow, and often a bit dreary, but always catchy. Their latest two CDs are a bit more upbeat and cheerful, but true to their or... [READ REVIEW]
