Weezer's debut is the ultimate power pop album, with the possible exception of Big Star's "#1 Record". By mixing rock and even punk riffs with poppy, catchy hooks and some quirky humor, Weezer's debut is instantly classic. Pinkerton, their cult favorite followup, is arguably more "artistic", darker, weirder and therefore "cooler", but their debut is their best in terms of song for song. Each song is memorable, catchy and near perfect. From the four hits "My Name is Jonas", "Undone", "Buddy Holly" and "Say It Ain't So" to the fan favorites "No One Else" and "In The Garage", The Blue Album contains some of Weezer's most well known and loved songs. More importantly, it also has great lesser known songs. The mid tempo rocker "The World Has Turned and Left Me Here" sounds great and has clever lyrics, and the sunny, road trip ready tracks "Surf Wax America" and "Holiday" ooze summer. Finally, the closing, haunting epic "Only In Dreams" is perhaps the best song. A mysterious story of lost dreams and a dream girl who apparently is just that is stretched out into a jam that never feels too long and remains essential throughout its 8 minute length. All ten songs are essential, and together they form one of the best albums of the 90s.
