Waylon made this record at a time in his career when he was out to be as creative as he could be, and to try to truly make his own kind of music. It begins, "It's the same old tune, fiddle and guitar / where do we take it from here?" What Waylon brought was change, simply put. His 70s work represented a reaction against the slickness of Nashville. It's sparse and raw in its simplicity. I find myself coming back to this album, and a few of his other mid-70s albums, every now and again when I'm in the mood for this kind of stuff, and this album especially never disappoints.
