In my obsessive checking of Pitchfork, I heard about this band about a week before it was released. I wasn't quite sure what the Pitchfork staff was referring to when they said that the band had a thing for afro-beats and that kind of stuff, but it definitely sparked my interest. When I finally listened to it, it wasn't exactly what I had expected when I tried to think about what 'afro-beats' meant, but I was pleasently surprised to find it was a lot more approachable that what I had originally contemplated.
The style is very laid back and unpretentious, like you're sitting on a couch, listening to your friends jam for a half an hour. It's pretty easy to get a sense of their background...how many other bands would write a song about grammar or architecture. What I like most though, is how consise the record is. Not only are the songs short, sweet, and to the point, but there is clearly no filler. There weren't any songs added to make it longer. For the quality of tracks we get here, 34 minutes is long enough...it just makes it easier for me to listen to over and over again!
