What i'm about to say about this album will most likely alienate me from every person who considers themselves happy people. This album is one of the best emo albums i've ever heard. That's right one of the best EMO albums i've ever heard.
Now before you stop reading hear me out. The songs are about lost love, and other emotional topics. The song "The Sporting Life" is one of the most depressing songs i have ever heard and it deals with a cheating girlfriend. The difference between most emo and this however is how the bands present the subject.
Emo bands=my girlfriend broke up with me six months ago but i can't get over it ever because then i would run out of material to write my next album. scream, scream, bad rhyme scheme.
The Decemberists=pirates, shipwrecks, not being good at sports, and laughing at Amercia are cool subjects to write about and subjects that we can make people relate to.
Seriously though this cd is a great choice for any fan of music anywhere. The songs are unique and different from what most people listen too. The songs are also very touching many times. "Eli The Barrow Boy" is a song that can make anybody cry if they think about it hard enough. "The Mariners Revenge Song" is 8:45 of pure joy.
And on a side note for theatre students they found a way to rhyme Miranda with something, but i won't tell you what so that you go buy the cd to find out!
