Wow. This is a beautiful record. A true gem. I googled it and checked around for information on her, and in the process read Allmusic's and Other Music's comparisons to Vashti Bunyan, Leonard Cohen, and Nick Drake. They're dead on, in fact. This record is that good. But apart from the fact she wrote and recorded the songs between 1970 and 1973 during a moody period in her life, and that her son gave a copy to J Mascis who passed it on to Andrew Rieger at Orange Twin, who saw that it was finally properly released, there isn't much information available on her. The album is just her alone with her spanish guitar, except on the album's closer, Give Me a Smile, which features strings. She has a beautiful and at times breathy voice that's clear and pure sounding, and incredibly expressive of feeling. The songs are touching and personal. Each time I listen to it it leaves me with a heavy and calm feeling. It actually makes me wish I didn't live in the city. If I had a porch to sit on I'd put the stereo speakers in the windowsill, smoke a joint, put the album on, and then go out there with a cup of tea and listen to it in the perfect setting. Or, the Sunday Times and a cup of coffee would work just fine too, if that's your thing...
I mean, what else can I say? Five stars all the way.
