I'm a fan. What can I say? I saw these guys in an overcrowded bar in Louisville, Kentucky about 2 years ago and it was splendid. With that said, we all just kept wondering how Britt Daniel was going to top the thematic classic, Gimme Fiction. GF pretty much ruined me for a solid month. I listened to it with some good friends of mine after many New Castles and some of Indiana's finest, packed into a gi-normous bubbler! (Thank you Mandi). We had it on vinyl, cranked up to 11 on a knock-off vintage stereo, of which I bought the following year's model. The next time I sampled a new release by the band was not in such perfect conditions, but as I drove away from the monstrousity that is the Virgin Music store in downtown Disney (fuckin rat...) I was already locked in on the great fucking sound Britt Daniel gets from his semi-hollow body guitars, and once again amazed by the simplicity and genius in Jim Eno's complimentary drumming. "Don't Make Me a Target" is a fucking monster starter and "Black Like Me" is an even more fitting ending to a brilliant record. The latter feels like the Beatles got a shot in the arm and were updated about 20 years, Daniel does not hide the influence of the fab four, but he never rests on their coat tails either. "My Little Japanese Cigarette Case" lasts about as long as it takes to repeat the title about 4 times, which in a sense, is what they do... probably a few more times than four, but it's fucking great. "The Underdog" is the single, and it's apparent, but this damn thing may be the one of the best fucking pure pop songs I have heard in a while. I am a picky Spoon fan, one who changes his opinion on their best album week to week. A Series of Sneaks, Girls Can Tell, Kill the Moonlight, and Gimme Fiction are all in heavy rotation... add Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga to that list. What a sweet name!
