If you want to understand the end of the sixties musically you need to listen to this album. This is probably the last great folk-rock album, and its simply magnificent, the lyrics are spot on and Neil Young's voice plays them out with emotion and sincerity. The simplicity of the sound that this album crafts allows you to the follow along and paint the world his voice projects, it was a last of the breed. This isn't to discount any of Neil Young's past or prior work but in my opinion this is his best album, whether its his most popular or accessible work is to be argued at length. This album came at a time of change in the scene, woodstock was long past and Vietnam was coming toa c lose, the scene was dead and proto punk and heavy metal were being birthed. Bob Dylan had long dropped his acoustic guitar, and in After The Gold Rush, Neil had used an electric guitar but for Harvest he came back with the acouustic set and it really carries the whole album thematically tracks like Out On The Weekend really hit the nail on the sense of aging and a loss of the unnecessary and the scaled back musical accoutrements place it there but it can also swell with the instrummentation of tracks like A Man Needs A Maid. This is a quintessential album on the timeline of rock history. If you like this album you should also pick up Prairie Wind as it's apparently the end of a trilogy in Neil's mind stretching from harvest, Harvest Moon and to it. I wouldn't pick it up for the trilogy reason but for the fact its and interesting album and much better than the release prior of Greendale which feels too jaded and stretched. But I'll leave that for another review, know your music pick up this album.
