Recorded in the latter days of Perry's Black Ark studio, ROAST FISH COLLIE WEED & CORNBREAD is a testament to the Upsetter's genius of simple arrangements perfected by top notch musicians. A mish-mash of mooing cows and crying babies combined with various percussive elements give the slow solid rhythms a bounce that rides the floating, heavily reverbed vocals with a graceful stride. His signature studio wizardry pulls it all together for another fine example of the Dub-Reggae style he pioneered.
This being the first release where Perry himself delivers all the lead vocals, he takes the opportunity to give the listener a glimpse into the everyday world of the urban Jamaican lifestyle. Songs like 'Ghetto Sidewalk', 'Free Up the Weed' and 'Curly Locks' address social issues of taxpayers rights and class stereotyping. Healthy diet and physical fitness are promoted in 'Throw Some Water In' and 'Favorite Dish'.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED to anyone interested in creative original music. It's wacky and serious and at times ridiculous. To the casual listener or non-Reggae fan, the music may seem cliché and redundant but bare in mind this is the work of a master in his own rite.
