I don't think it's the alternative rock classic many declare it to be, but Psychocandy is a memorable trendsetting album. It is clear that Dinosaur Jr. in particular were influenced by this album, the monotone, laid back cool of the vocals and fuzzy, crushingly loud distortion of Psychocandy became hallmarks of that band. The opening "Just Like Honey" juggles 60's pop sounds, crushing feedback and lyrics about oral sex, and is a bona fide modern classic. None of the other songs are quite as great, but "My Little Underground", "Never Understand" "Cut Dead" ""You Trip Me Up" and "Sowing Seeds" with the intro copped from "Honey" are nearly as good. Sometimes the monotone vocals and feedback get tiresome, and the album has a lack of variety. Still, on the best songs, Psychocandy lives up to its name: it's a tasty mix of amplified punk guitar and sweet, fluffy pop thrills, with a dark center.
