Sure, oil and water don't mix. Take a puddle of rain at the gas station or some Italian dressing on a slab of Iceberg. The musical equivalent has always been Bob Dylan and Joan Baez. Dylan's croaky nasal poetry lay slain by the pain of Baez's ridiculous vibrato and ultra white operatic warble. Love is indeed blind.

Well, there's a new couple in town. The venerable Dan Bejar of Destroyer, the New Pornographers and Swan Lake takes a backseat to his girlfriend Sydney Vermont with their musical love child Hello, Blue Roses. The absurdly titled The Portrait is Finished and I Have Failed to Capture Your Beauty... is mostly made up of Vermont singing unimaginative folk while Bejar chimes in with some "da da da's" here and there. A few of the songs are so stereotypically folky that they could have been included in Christopher Guest's folk mockumentary A Mighty Wind.

Dan Bejar hasn't done his girlfriend any favors by having anything to do with this album. Although, his presence did earn her an extra star in this rating. It's not fair to Sydney Vermont that I find her incredibly annoying simply because I expected something entirely different. I'm sure she's just as lovely a person as is Joan Baez. Just don't buy this record if you're longing for the next Destroyer album. That's right around the corner.

Baez's ridiculous vibrato ?! You should listen her carrefully. And after hear it, then speak, and i'm sure you wouldn't say "ridiculous".

And the album The Portrait is Finished and I Have Failed to Capture Your Beauty... Yes, it is a love indie folk album. So what? And, beside, Sydney Vermont is a new Kate Bush. Sunny Skies told it to me.
