Should’ve been an EP. A two man Deep Purple ground out amped stoner rock bass riffs with MC5 vocals in a Franz Ferdinand reimagining made tYou’re a Woman, I’m a Machinean album that got kids all excited last year. Now handing off a few songs to DJ’s to play around with, the hook of the band is lost. And what made YAWIAM get notice was the songcraft—the lyrics, the hooks and the melodies. Unfortunately, some of these attributes get lost when the Djs run these songs through their Macs. The massive wall of sound from the smartass duo (reportedly muy impresivo en vivo) gets lost and now we’ve got the stoner duo lofi electroclash. Seems new, but Jon Spence Blues Explosion did this 10 years ago with Experimental Remixes putting Ghostface Killah, UNKLE and Moby on the mix board. That EP had mixed results just like Romance Bloody Romance. A couple of cuts do stand out and would make the perfect iTunes purchase. Romantic Rights (Erol Alkan’s Love From Below Re-Edit) and Little Girl (mstrkrft edition) will get the chicks in the wifebeaters and hipless cords dancing in your apartment while the dudes with ironic facial hair and ski jackets talk shop in the kitchen and the sole unDJ’d cut You’re Lovely (But You’ve Got Problems) gives you an idea what the fuss on the premixed album was about. Sometimes rock is rock and disco is disco.
