This album should be seen as the prelude to Bowie's masterpiece of Ziggy Stardust. Not to minimize this album but it truly can't touch the strength of its predecessor but herein lies its beauty as it sets up and further develops Stardust. The two most obvious examples are in "Oh You Pretty Things" and "Life On Mars." In the former he expresses the coming of a greater race Homo Superior > Homo Sapiens, Ziggy is a martian who comes to tell the people that their world will be gone in 5 years. On the latter its expressing this sense of stagnation and looking to the stars and longing for knowledge of what's to come which Ziggy imparts to the people. The first four tracks are where most of the successor is developed where as the rest of the album comes off as a good but somewhat uncohesive mass of songs. Thats a lot of why I don't give it a 5. It's not a perfect album, it has weak songs, but it also has great ones. Balance is key to perfection and after this album David would strike that line a number of times. It's a definite add to your collection but pick of Stardust and The Man Who Sold The World before this one.
