This record is a masterpiece. I mean, Bowie's got about 10 masterpieces under his belt. Funny thing about this record is that it's pretty early in his career. But it sounds very self-assured and he's not trying to be super slick or anything. When I think of it I always imagine it being later on. It opens with Changes, his ode to aging or whatever. And then Oh! You Pretty Things, which I always imagine being off of Ziggy, I guess just cause of the movie. But this album does feature Mick Ronson on lead guitar, and he's in fine form here as usual. Eight Line Poem is one of my favorite minutes in rock and roll. For some reason the lyric "the mobile spins to its collision" often repeats in my head. Life on Mars? of course is a Bowie staple. Kooks and Quicksand are brilliant. Fill Your Heart is a bouncy, poppy Kinks-y kind of number, while Andy Warhol creates a more tense mood. His song for Bob Dylan, called Song for Robert Zimmerman addresses the man himself, saying, basically, "hey man, I wrote a song for you." And going on to elaborate on what Dylan's music means to him. Queen Bitch is a nice little precursor to glam, and the Bewlay Brothers is a intriguing and sort of confouding closer, with it's melancholic but pretty mood and odd lyrics. Bowie's plays a lot of piano on this album, and some sax, and it's mostly a pretty sparse affair, and serves to show off the voice and musicality of the duke. This is one of my alltime faves, for sure.
