At dusk on a cold and drizzly Brooklyn day I shuffled through the narrow streets of my neighborhood. It wasn’t an enjoyable leisurely stroll, but a long speed walk to the bank in order to beat a pending automatic withdrawal with the last few bucks I had in my wallet--determined to deny that imminent $30 overdraft fee. Accompanying me on my journey was Clinic’s latest. Like the soundtrack to my next hour, Clinic cemented the mood I was already in: anxiously irritated and slightly menacing.
It might not have been the most soothing score to my personal mini-melodrama, but it was perfect. Yeah, it would have been a boring film, but I starred in it. Just like one of the four masked surgeons of Clinic my face was hidden by scarf to passing strangers. My step was in time and my head was swimming in the ominous guitar crunch and steady rhythm. Around fifteen minutes into it I started to lighten up a bit--not only because I was going to make it before the bank closed, but because I was listening to one hell of an album.
From the distorted opening notes of “Family”
MP3
(and its threatening bomb-blast ending) to the somber comedown of closing track “Visitations,” Clinic forge a certain brand of rock and roll that is uniquely and unmistakably their own--somewhat rare these days. These Liverpudlians owe a certain amount of gratitude to the Velvet Underground and Joy Division, but they are their own animal. Who else can say they made the melodica cool? The Hooters?
Clinic are at the top of their game on
Visitations
and the proof is in lead single “Harvest (Within You)”
MP3
. It’s an immediately capturing album with performances that are energized and raw while the production depicts the tribal punk essence and all of its dynamism and intricacy. If you’re a fan of the Clinic discography you won’t be disappointed. If you’re not familiar you should change that.
