Review

Rated Member Rating by Ruben_James on 10/05/2006

The daughter of Serge Gainsbourg and Jane Birkin assembled an all star line-up to produce her second album, 5:55. The first, Lemon Incest, came 22 years earlier and was written by her legendary father. She was 13... which makes the title a little more than creepy coming from daddy. Oh, Serge.

Speaking of that all star cast:

Produced by Nigel Godrich
Music written and played by Air
Lyrics by Jarvis Cocker (Pulp) and Neil Hannon (Divine Comedy)

It obviously pays to have had such an influential father. The ghost of Serge does seem to loom large over this album. Charlotte’s breathy half-singing seems the perfect amalgamation of both father and mother. The other major genetic trait might be the sex appeal that 5:55 oozes. Much like her father’s work, this is an album to get it on to... perhaps on a bearskin rug with bubbly in hand, no less.

While there is nothing new or groundbreaking here, 5:55 is a pleasant album. It’s easy to listen to all the way through; although it tends to lend itself more to background music whilst whispering sweet nothings in your honey's ear over wine and cheese.

I now present five albums that I feel make up the sound and atmosphere of 5:55. You should own them... If you’re into that sort of thing.

Jane Birkin & Serge Gainsbourg - Jane Birkin Serge Gainsbourg (1969)
Serge Gainsbourg - Histoire de Melody Nelson (1971)
Farncoise Hardy – If You Listen (1971)
Margo Guryan – Take A Picture (1968)
Air - The Virgin Suicides (2000)

Au revoir...
