My friend insisted I check this EP out. "Hot new band," he said. Or something like that. And I'll agree, somewhat. This really isn't bad. It's youthful, energetic rock and roll (emphasis on the "roll"), delivered with lots of feeling--which is never a bad thing. It's a sparse, 3-piece affair, with the occasional harmony vocal. Piano and sax appear here and there. It recalls a lot of types of music--garge rock, southern soul. Kinda reminds me of CCR and even Motown at times. And there's even a section of Thin Lizzy style twin, harmonizing lead guitars in one of the songs--which are all pretty catchy, I might add. The singer's scratchy, smoky vocals remind me of GBV's Bob Pollard and of Greg Cartwright of the Reigning Sound. But I do have a few gripes with this EP. I can't help but cringe at the 6-second intro track, in which Hunter howls, "We're Catfish Haven and this is what we do," and the nearly five minute long closer, The Love I'm Saving, reallys begins to grate after about 3 minutes, as the the last 2 minutes are pretty much just Hunter sing-/screaming "Baby" over and over and over again. I must admit, it really makes me want to turn it off. I read somewhere that the band's name comes from the name of the trailer park where singer George Hunter grew up. If it's not true, it's a clever piece of marketing, anyway. Overall, this is a pretty cool introductory EP. I won't be surprised if this band goes on to make some cool albums.
