After about 4 listens, this album is starting to grow on me more and more. Only two members of the band worked on this album, vocalist Trish Keenan and bassist James Cargill.
When I think about Broadcast, one of the first things that comes to mind is the the amazing drum sound and cool parts that the drummer added at times, so I wonder if some Broadcast fans will miss this. Because it really added a special energy to those songs, and certainly helped to define the original sound. It wasn't just the drum parts themselves -- but also, I always thought the drums were mixed in a real interesting way or with some cool fancy plug-ins and reverbs and stuff. One of the other things that comes to my mind when thinking of this band is some of the super cool programming like on Microtronics.
For this album though, it's kind of amazing how little drums there are. I think it actually works well though. I mean, it was great with drums, but I've really enjoyed listening to these songs with very minimal drum parts. As far as the fancy programming stuff, on this record, I think the computer and effects stuff is simpler at times (but still really nice) and you might even pay attention to it a lot more since there's no drums pounding away and cymbols ringing over the intricacies of all the little fuzzy sounds and panning tricks, etc. But there are plenty of nice and simple instrument parts as well. "Tears In the Typing Pool" for example is a real pretty song with just a very simple strummy guitar part.
And the singing, like always, is beautiful. I love it. There is also some real pretty and catchy songs on this one that I think fans will grow to like just as much as other well-known favorites like "Colour Me In" or "Valerie". Some of my favorites on this album were "Corporeal", "Subject ToThe Ladder", "Arc Of A Journey".
