Like many of you, my introduction to the Bee Gees came in the form of a teenage disco king from Brooklyn clad in white suit and black shirt. I got a little older and nearly despised the hairy-chested brothers Gibb and their cartoonish falsettos. The decadence of the disco era Bee Gees stood for everything I was opposed to when I was beginning to get “serious” about music. I’ve since changed my tune and embrace the brilliance of an album released just months prior to my birth -- Main Course (1975). It’s now hard to resist the infectious bass of “Nights on Broadway” and song titles like “All This Making Love.” But, before all of this feathering of hair and satin jackets there were just three talented young Australians and their love of the Beatles and American R & B.

Last year I stood in the starlit sky of the Arizona desert and witnessed a glorious shooting star. My only wish: “Please release the first three Bee Gees records remastered in a box set with an additional three discs of bonus tracks!” Reprise Records hath made it so. Now looking back, I probably should’ve wished for world peace or fortune. But, hindsight is 20-something-or-other. Anyway, the beautifully packaged box of sets lay beneath our humble Christmas tree come the 25th of December. Whether by grace of Saint Nick, the baby Jesus, shooting star, or my thoughtful girlfriend, I have been in Bee Gee bliss.

For anyone unfamiliar with the genius of early Bee Gees, you probably aren’t. You know “To Love Somebody,” “Massachusetts,” and “I Started a Joke.” However, those classic tunes only scratch the surface. There were the secondary hits: “Holiday,” “New York Mining Disaster 1941,” and “I've Gotta Get a Message to You.” And then, of course, there are the secret treasures that these three albums keep. “Every Christian Lion Hearted Man Will Show You,” “Cucumber Castle,” and “Lemons Never Forget” prove the deep well of near perfect songwriting each of these LP’s possess. So, yeah... you get the first three albums. Awesome, right? Well, what’s really worth the 60 bones you gotta lay down are the three bonus discs of outtakes, alternate versions, and even Christmas tunes!

Still not sold? Hmmmm... I did mention the fantastic packaging, right? Well, I understand that $60 isn’t cheap. So, to prepare yourself for eventually needing to own this baby, search out a copy of Best of Bee Gees -- a compilation from 1969 of songs from their first three albums. In the mean time, I’ll be waiting patiently for the hopeful second installment in this series which would include their brilliant 1969 double album, Odessa.
