In the first few seconds of Awesome Color’s second album it’s apparent that the Michigan-bred Brooklyn trio’s take-no-prisoners approach to pure Motor City rock and roll is more than plain homage. They’re proud of their roots. The band wastes no time in making this evident with the launch of opening track “Eyes of Light” (MP3) as Derek Stanton’s guitar feedback hangs over drummer Allison Busch’s furious beat before Michael Troutman pulls it all together with a fuzz bass bedrock that drives the song for the next five minutes.

The only thing missing from the onset of Electric Aborigines is the legendary MC5 preamble, “Kick out the jams, motherfucker!” Of course, there’s a fair amount of Stooges thrown in for good measure, as any student of Detroit rock might expect. But, the band’s enthusiastic preference for simple all-out rock and roll is stimulating in an age of overblown, over-produced epic indie rock.

With just three adept members wailing away on their instruments Awesome Color has no need to polish what isn’t there. They’re tight as all hell on up-tempo tracks like “Already Down” and “Burning” and give “Come and Dance” and “Evil Rose” room to breathe with a looser laid back style. Electric Aborigines gets in and out without feeling overwrought or self-important, clocking in at an ideal 45 minutes. Played at the right volume it will leave your ears ringing and hungry for Awesome Color to kick out the jams, motherfucker!
