Review

Whatever people say I am, that is what I am not

gives me all that I can stand of cocky, cockney, ska-punk rock

when I feel the need for head-banging and yelling "Ah, F*ck off!"

I can give this disc a spin, and feel I'm back on top

but, then again, I'm not convinced that this is what I need

all this fast-paced 4/4 time without an ounce of room to breathe

everything seems a bit force-fed and crammed into each measure

as if they have chosen quantity at the expense of pleasure

much like this lame, run-on-sentence review, that just happens to rhyme

this 2006 LP debut, is just not worth your time.

This album felt like one, big, uninteresting run-on sentence. Maybe this is just not my style of music, and so I am just not "wired" to enjoy it, and therefore can't appreciate it. Maybe. Maybe my opinion is tainted by all the hype and attention this band is getting. Attention that I do not understand, which in turn frustrates me and might cause me to judge unfairly. Maybe. I do think that over-hyping mediocrity brings mediocrity down a notch or two. For example, someone telling me how much they love the Olive Garden, and how it is their favorite restaurant, "Of-All-Time!", makes me think how much I hate the Olive Garden, when, in fact, before they said anything, I did not hate it; I just thought it was unremarkable.

I don't hear anything new or interesting here at all. Comparisons to bands like the Smiths and the Kinks are entirely inaccurate and unfair. This stuff seems more like Hootie and the Blowfish of Northern England. Granted, a little more edge, but I envision the same khaki-shorts-berkenstock-sandle wearing crowd waiting in line to see this type of show. I see them playing gig's at places called Shooter's or Olive-Bee's Crab Shack Apple Garden for local radio station KROC's ("THE ROCK!!") sponsored backyard beach bonanza block party. It all seems as frat-party rock as, say, post 1987 Red Hot Chili Peppers.

Can someone please help to explain to me how anyone could declare these guys, “Our Generation's Most Important Band”, and keep a straight face?

This record is worth 2-3 listens, tops. I enjoyed it a couple of times through, but after that, nah. Even initially, though, it's obvious that they're little more than what so many other British (and American) bands are doing these days.

So yes, good review. Or at least, one with which I agree.
